Brain Injury Clinic

at The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

Director: Vani Rao, M.D.

The Brain Injury Outpatient Clinic offers psychiatric services to patients, 18 years and older, who have sustained brain injury after birth (acquired brain injury) due to any cause. Brain injury is often associated with cognitive, mood and/or behavior problems often referred to as neuropsychiatric problems. Treatment of these problems includes both medications and non-medication strategies. The overarching goal in the management of these problems is to minimize disability and maximize productivity.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Comprehensive evaluation and treatment - Management of neuropsychiatric problems includes comprehensive evaluation and regular longitudinal follow up. The initial evaluation usually takes about three to four hours. Patients are encouraged to bring pertinent medical x-rays and current medication at the time of their initial evaluation. Follow-up visits will last for about 30-60 minutes and will include working with a therapist and a neuropsychiatrist. Steps will be taken to ensure that care is coordinated with the patient's primary care doctor when appropriate.

Consultations - The Brain Injury Clinic also provides consultation service. A comprehensive consultation evaluation may take 2-3 visits over a period 1-2 months.

Hospitalizations - Psychiatric hospitalization may be sometimes necessary. The Brain Injury Clinic has a close affiliation with the inpatient neuropsychiatry unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

CLINIC STAFF

The Brain Injury Clinic is staffed by an interdisciplinary team composed of neuropsychiatrist, registered nurse therapists and licensed counselors. In addition, the team also works closely with the Hopkins case management & physical rehabilitation services.

COST OF OUTPATIENT VISITS

Medicare, Medicaid and many other commercial insurance plans are accepted. Verification of all private insurance must be made prior to an appointment being scheduled. When applicable, co-payments are expected at the time of service.
