GENERAL OUTPATIENT SERVICES

Adult Outpatient Services provides outpatient psychiatric treatment for persons 18 years of age or older. It serves as the single point of entry for adults into the Community Psychiatry Program. Typical problems treated include relationship difficulties, trouble coping with stress, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injuries, and substance abuse. Highly skilled mental health professionals provide crisis intervention, comprehensive psychiatric assessments, and individual, family and group psychotherapy. Psychiatric medications are prescribed, if needed. All treatment occurs on the Bayview Medical Center campus. Referrals may also be made to other programs in Community Psychiatry including case management, mobile treatment, vocational training, or psychiatric rehabilitation services.

Referrals
Referrals may be made by mental health providers, community agencies, concerned family members or by the person who feels in need of help. There are no catchment area restrictions. Intake appointments are Monday through Friday and may be made by contacting the intake worker at 410-550-0104.

Services
All new patients are evaluated by a licensed mental health professional and a psychiatrist. Once the patient has been admitted for treatment a primary therapist will be assigned. After that, the primary therapist will schedule regular appointments and coordinate services with other treatment providers as indicated. Therapists provide all of the psychotherapy services. If a patient is prescribed psychiatric medications, he/she must meet with a psychiatrist at least every three months. Therapists also provide on-call coverage after program hours for patients experiencing problems.

ADULT MOBILE TREATMENT PROGRAM

The Mobile Treatment Program serves adults in the community with serious and persistent mental illness who have difficulty following through with traditional outpatient services. In addition to being unable to engage in traditional outpatient treatment, an individual must have a history of inpatient psychiatric treatment, extensive usage of emergency services, and/or arrests associated with mental illness.

Patients receive services in their home from a team of psychiatric professionals. By providing consistent services in the community, patients achieve greater treatment compliance and experience fewer hospitalizations. The goal is to return patients to traditional forms of services.

AUTISM AND SPECIAL NEEDS CLINIC

The Autism and Special Needs Clinic provides comprehensive psychiatric services for adults over the age of 18 with psychiatric illness and mild-to-moderate intellectual disability or developmental disabilities. The program was designed to meet the unique and complex needs of this patient population and is committed to providing expert assessment and treatment. CASEWORK ADVOCACY PROGRAM

The Casework Advocacy Program provides case-management services to a target population as defined by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the east Baltimore community. Case managers help clients access needed community services while encouraging them to live as independently as possible. The program provides home visits, entitlement procurement, and assistance with housing, service coordination, help with medication, and wellness education. Services are currently available for Baltimore City residents although some exceptions can be made for adjacent county residents. All clients must be authorized for service by APS Health Care, the company that provides administrative services for mental health care for the Medicaid program in Maryland.

CREATIVE ALTERNATIVES

The mission of Creative Alternatives is to support, teach, and empower adults with serious and persistent mental illness to successfully live, work, and socialize in their communities. The program provides psychiatric treatment, rehabilitative services, and assistance with daily living for adults who have not benefited from traditional services. Creative Alternatives also works with the community to promote opportunities and acceptance through advocacy and education.

Program Philosophy
Creative Alternative clients are considered members of the treatment team. The team does whatever it takes to provide services and supports that are continuous, flexible, and determined by the members needs and goals. Clients are encouraged to assume personal responsibility for their lives by making their own choices. Team members establish adult-to-adult relationships based upon respect and equality, recognizing and supporting the unique strengths and individual capabilities.

Services
Creative Alternatives assists members with achieving their life goals in addition to helping them with their medical and psychiatric needs. These goals may involve housing, employment, transportation, education, substance abuse treatment, legal assistance, community integration, financial management.

Creative Alternatives is funded entirely by grants from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Baltimore Mental Health Systems, Inc. Clients do not pay to be a part of the program, nor do they forego their government benefits. Baltimore Mental Health Systems, Inc. screens all program referrals.

EARLY PSYCHOSIS INTERVENTION CLINIC (EPIC)

The Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic is a specialized treatment program for patients who are currently experiencing an initial psychotic episode or have received a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder within the past year. The program provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, second opinion diagnostic consultations, individual therapy, family support and education groups, and medication management services. EPIC has direct access to child and adult psychiatric rehabilitation programs, partial hospitalization services, a sheltered employment program, case management and mobile services, as well as referrals for neuropsychiatric testing when necessary. The program is designed to provide immediate treatment in order to reduce psychotic symptoms, avert hospitalizations, improve compliance with outpatient services and improve overall day to day functioning across all settings.

GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY PROGRAM / NEUROPSYCHIATRY / ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program offers outpatient services to individuals 60 and over who are experiencing memory loss, depression, anxiety, and/or behavioral problems. The program serves patients with brain injury who are over 18 years of age. INTENSIVE PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES (IPS)

Intensive Psychiatric Services (IPS) is an intensive outpatient program that is part of the continuum of services offered in Adult Outpatient Services.When a patient needs more support and treatment than is generally available in a traditional outpatient mental health setting, a referral may be made to IPS. A team of mental health professionals provide short-term, urgent psychiatric treatment for patients who are able to function safely while they continue to live in the community. Patients may attend the program in the morning, Monday through Friday. A typical treatment day may consist of an individual and two group psychotherapy sessions as well as medication reviews by the psychiatrist two to three times a week. Transportation is usually provided to and from the program each day. Upon discharge, most patients return to their former outpatient therapist.

MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE (MISA)

The Mental Illness and Substance Abuse (MISA) treatment team provides services to persons who have both mental health and substance abuse problems. MISA is a drug-free, abstinence based program. The team is particularly skilled in helping people with serious and persistent mental illness who also experience difficulty due to alcohol or drug abuse/dependence.Case management services are available. Individual and group psychotherapy, as well as urine screens, are a core part of the treatment structure.The team will coordinate treatment services with the psychiatric rehabilitation teams at the Adult Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (see below) for many of the MISA patients.

POVERTY AND DEPRESSION PROJECT

The Poverty and Depression Project is a unique initiative within Community Psychiatry that attempts to improve accessibility of mental health services for persons living in poverty. It is funded by Baltimore Mental Health Systems, Inc. and several private foundations. Treatment is provided by a licensed mental health professional, psychiatrists and a case manger in three community-based locations. Persons seen in these neighborhood programs are screened by agency staff, and if psychiatric problems are identified, they are referred to the mental health team. In addition to improving accessibility to treatment, the Poverty and Depression Project addresses stigma and community misperceptions regarding psychiatric issues through education and training.

PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION PROGRAM

The Psychiatric Rehabilitation program provides comprehensive, individualized and need-based rehabilitation services to promote independence and improve the quality of life for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. The program provides education and support that is guided by a range of assessments and individualized rehabilitation plans. In addition, the Program offers specialized vocational and supported housing services tailored to the needs of the individual. Patients are encouraged to take a leadership role in the program activities and services. There are specialized teams for geriatric patients as well as for person with developmental disabilities.
