Background

Dr. Orlene Thomas is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her clinical expertise includes general obstetrics and gynecology hospital-based practices while focusing on inpatient obstetrics as well as outpatient prenatal care for at risk patients.

Dr. Thomas received her Bachelor’s in biology from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. She then went on to receive her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and thereafter completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University-Hutzel Hospital in Detroit Michigan.

With the assistance of CNM Kimberly Jones Beatty she initiated a specialty clinic specifically for postpartum wellness at JHH Nelson 2 in January of 2022. This clinic’s primary focus is to see high risk postpartum patients for early follow up such as wound lacerations, preeclampsia, mood checks, and other related complications. Her research investigates the improvement of timely postpartum care to at risk patients, OB/GYN quality improvement, and the simulation for shoulder dystocia management skill acquisition and competency assessment.

She has also contributed to the Johns Hopkins Manual of Gynecology and Obstetrics on cultivating topics, “Normal Labor and Delivery, Operative Delivery, Malpresentations”, and “Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence”. Dr. Thomas is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the Society for Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology.
