Biography

Dr. Amy E. Valasek is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

A specialist in pediatric orthopaedics, Dr. Valasek is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has special expertise in both surgical and non-surgical sports medicine.

She treats conditions that include patellar tendonitis (“jumper’s knee”), patellofemoral pain syndrome (“runner’s knee”) and tracking disorders, snapping hip syndrome and sports injuries to the shoulder.

She also has a special interest in injuries related to overuse, bone issues related to disordered eating, running injuries and concussions in children.

Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2010, Dr. Valasek worked in a private orthopedic practice and the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department.

Dr. Valasek earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland before completing a pediatrics residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Maryland.

She also holds a master''s degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Valasek’s research experience includes working as a laboratory technician in the Johns Hopkins Department of Pathology and in the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesia.

She has made a number of presentations related to sports medicine and authored four book chapters.

Dr. Valasek is American Board of Pediatrics-certified in both pediatrics and primary care sports medicine.
