Dr. Michael E. Zenilman is the vice chair and regional director of surgery for the Washington, D.C. region, as well as a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Zenilman is certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He practices out of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., Johns Hopkins Health Care and Surgery Center in Bethesda, Md. and Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md. In Dr. Zenilman’s position overseeing three community hospitals, he works to ensure safety, quality and service standards in surgical care at each location are among the best practices in the field. 

Dr. Zenilman is a specialist in gastrointestinal, pancreatico-biliary and geriatric surgery. He has an expertise in various types of surgery, including biliary tract surgery, colon and intestinal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, geriatric surgery, hernia surgery, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, pancreatic surgery and surgical oncology. He also has an expertise in Crohn’s disease, flexible sigmoid, gallbladder disorders, hernia repair, parathyroid conditions and thyroid cancer. 

Dr. Zenilman earned his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. 

Dr. Zenilman is a fellow of the American Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Geriatric Surgery Task Force of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American Bariatric Society. 

Dr. Zenilman has been named a Top Doctor for numerous years by Castle Connolly. 

Dr. Zenilman has research interests in pancreatic regeneration, pancreatic surgery and laparoscopic surgery. He is a member of the Archives of Surgery Editorial Board and the World Journal of Gastroenterology Editorial Board. Dr. Zenilman has contributed to numerous publications and received grant support from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. more
