Biography

Dr. Zachary is a director of the Division of Immunogenetics and Transplantation Immunology in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Zachary oversees clinical histocompatibility testing for solid organ and tissue transplantation.

Her major interest is in the humoral response to allogeneic transplantation. She was involved in the development of the protocol used at Johns Hopkins to desensitize potential transplant recipients who are immunologically incompatible with their donor. She initiated and participated in the development of an assay for the isolation and quantification of HLA-specific B cells.

Currently, she has expaned her investigation into non-HLA antibodies relevant to transplantation. Dr. Zachary has been active in several national and international medical and scientific organizations and is a recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and the Ohio State University Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award.

    Research Summary

Dr. Zachary's major research is in the mechanisms of desensitization and the role of non-HLA antibodies in transplantation.

Technology Expertise: HLA antibody characterization, population genetics, allograft rejection

    Lab:

The laboratory has an ongoing investigation on non-HLA targets of rejection that are expressed on vascular endothelial cells. This research is being conducted under the direction of Dr. Annette Jackson.   Dr. Mary Carmel Philogene is investigating the role of AT1R antibody in organ transplantation.   Dr. Mary S. Leffell who co-directs both the division and the laboratory, is involved in studying desensitization in haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
