Background

Ms. Lane is the Administrative Director and Research Project Manager of the Department of Neurology's Brain Injury OUtcomes division, along with Daniel F. Hanley, M.D. To organize these tasks, she established a dedicated clinical trial management center that conducts its activities under the moniker BIOS. Acting as a clinical coordinating center, and data coordinating center in some trials, the division has developed into a full research organization. Since 1999 the division has been coordinating multicenter drug, biologic and medical device trials. The division’s primary focus has been the design, oversight and analyses of neurological and neurosurgical clinical trials, whether conducted by investigators within the JHU system or through various national and international consortia. Ms. Lane's contributions include trial design, project and site management, investigator selection and qualification, training, data management, quality assurance, pharmacovigilance, medical writing and regulatory compliance assurances. The division’s therapeutic expertise now spans the gamut of neurological, neurosurgical, and critical care with a primary focus on functional and cognitive outcomes following stroke and brain injuries. She has developed an experienced staff and helped Dr. Hanley to create an expansive network of clinical trial professionals and collaborators, and to conduct large, complex, multicenter clinical trials on an international scale. Among the team's many successes are the MISTIE and CLEAR programs, which are developing what could become the first validated treatments for hemorrhagic stroke. The division is recognized by NIH and internationally as model of excellence in clinical trial performance.
