In Korea, she served as the Medical Commander of the 135th Forward Surgical Team, specializing in battlefield surgery. She also spent time with the military in Honduras and Egypt.
After completing her military obligation, Dr. Garrett was in private practice at Anne Arundel Medical Center. There she served as Program Director for Breast Cancer Survivors through her affiliation with the Breast Center. She also maintained an active role in the surgical training program for the Breast Surgery fellowship at Anne Arundel Medical Center and for the general surgery residency program at Washington Hospital Center.
Dr Garrett is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of The Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The American Society of Breast Surgeons, The D.C. Medical Society, as well as other medical organizations. She specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery, breast ultrasound, minimally invasive breast biopsy, sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma and breast cancer, and surgery of the stomach, intestines and colon. She has a special interest in the emerging field of robotics as applied to general surgery.
Dr. Garrett spends time every year working in the central highlands of Bolivia. There she works to provide direct surgical care to those who would otherwise go without appropriate medical interventions. As well, she is active in teaching local Bolivian surgeons advanced surgical techniques, specifically working to advance laparoscopic skills.
