Background

Dr. Voltaggio is an associate professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology since March 1st, 2014, and serves as the clinical director of Gastrointestinal Pathology. Dr. Voltaggio has made significant contributions to the fields of gastrointestinal pathology and these major accomplishments have led to her regional, national, and international reputation as a leader in this field.

Dr. Voltaggio has authored multiple peer-reviewed original clinical research articles, invited review articles, and four textbooks. Though her clinical research career has been focused on gastrointestinal pathology, she is especially interested in inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract. She has identified novel histologic patterns of inflammation associated with certain infections as well as novel HPV-driven anal glandular neoplasms. Dr. Voltaggio has also authored a number of invited reviews, reflecting the national recognition of her expertise in this area.

The Johns Hopkins Gastrointestinal and Liver Fellowship became ACGME-equivalent under her directorship. More than half of the graduating fellows have embraced successful academic careers at institutions across the nation. In addition, she directs the annual Johns Hopkins GI/Liver CME course, which attracts a wide variety of local, national, and international participants, including practicing pathologists and trainees. Dr. Voltaggio is heavily involved in resident and fellow teaching and gives a number of yearly, well-attended noon lectures to the pathology residents encompassing aspects of luminal gastrointestinal pathology.

Dr. Voltaggio devotes over 50% of her time to clinical work and is recognized nationally for her clinical excellence in diagnostic gastrointestinal pathology.  She receives consults from around the world and is invited to speak nationally and internationally on diagnostic gastrointestinal pathology. She is well-respected among JHH clinicians for her diagnostic acumen, collegiality, and effective communication.

Lastly, as a member of an underrepresented minority group herself, Dr. Voltaggio is dedicated to promoting diversity in our field.  She has led and participated in visits to medical schools across the country enriched for underrepresented minorities.  A number of diverse students have rotated with us in the department as a result of these visits.
