Biography

Dr. Zsuzsanna McMahan is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology. Dr. McMahan received her M.D. degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  She completed her internship and residency training in internal medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and a post-doctoral fellowship in rheumatology at Johns Hopkins University.  During her rheumatology fellowship, she also earned her Master in Health Sciences degree in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Upon completing her fellowship in June 2012, Dr. McMahan joined the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center as full-time faculty. Supported by the Rheumatology Research Foundation Scientist Development Award and the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, she currently focuses 80% of her time on conducting translational research under the mentorship of Drs. Antony Rosen, Livia-Casciola-Rosen, and Fredrick Wigley.  Dr. McMahan’s research focuses specifically on novel antigen identification in scleroderma and defining the target tissue in this disease.  The remainder of her academic time is allocated towards patient care and education.

Dr. McMahan is also actively involved in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).  She served on the ACR Fellow’s Subcommittee (FSC) from 2009-2011, during which time she was the Fellow Representative on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee (AMPC). In 2011 Dr. McMahan was instrumental in the development of a new session at the Annual Meeting– the ACR Knowledge Bowl – which she has continued to coordinate. She was invited to return as a full member of the AMPC for 2012-2014.  Dr. McMahan was also chair of the FSC from 2011-2012. During her time in this position she served on the ACR Committee on Workforce and Training.  In 2011 she was invited to join the ACR 2020 Task Force which ultimately provided a forecast and recommendations to the Board of Directors to guide membership development of the ACR in the coming decade.
