Research Interests

Dr. Coons research interests are in the development of endovascular devices and the techniques and outcomes associated with their usage for cerebrovascular pathology. He has published extensively in the field of stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

Biography

Dr. Alexander Coon serves as the Director of Endovascular Neurosurgery for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is one of the world leaders in the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms. Most known for his expertise in the use of flow-diverting stents to treat cerebral aneurysms, Dr. Coon has personally performed >300 cases using this technology. He has mentored other physicians in the use of this technology across the United States and around the world. He has published extensively on the techniques and outcomes associated with flow-diversion use for cerebral aneurysms. He has actively participated in numerous ongoing multi-center clinical trials for flow-diverting stent technology.

In addition to cerebral aneurysm surgery, his practice involves the surgical and endovascular treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations, and dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Coon utilizes the latest surgical and endovascular techniques to treat patients with carotid artery stenosis, acute stroke, intracerberal hemorrhage (ICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and moyamoya disease. He also focuses on the specialized treatment of spinal disorders, neurological trauma, and hydrocephalus.

Dr. Alexander Coon currently sees patients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Outpatient Center (JHOC) on Mondays or by alternate appointment in his office.
