Research & Publications
Dr. Perry-Parrish is a faculty member at Johns Hopkins in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; she is also Training Director of the postdoctoral child/pediatric psychology fellowship program. Dr. Perry-Parrish specializes in improving emotion regulation in children and adolescents. Her clinical interests emphasize practicing and promoting evidence-based care, including parent management training for childhood noncompliance, cognitive-behavioral therapy for youth anxiety/depression, and acceptance and mindfulness-based interventions to improve self-regulation. She is the director of behavior medicine services for the Pediatric Burn Program (Director: Dylan Stewart MD), Pediatric Dermatology (Director: Kate Puttgen MD), and Center for Sweat Disorders (Director: Malcolm Brock MD).
Dr. Perry-Parrish’s research program focuses the development of emotion regulation among youth, and how emotion and coping processes are related to psychosocial functioning. Current projects focus on normative development of emotion regulation across childhood and adolescence; association between emotion regulation and psychosocial functioning; and novel methods of assessing emotion regulation (e.g., peer nominations). Work with colleagues includes improving self-regulation through mindfulness instruction (MBSR) for vulnerable youth; and assessment and improvement of physical and psychosocial functioning among youth with medical conditions (e.g., eczema, sweat disorders, burn injuries). She is currently examining parent and child responses to pediatric burn injuries, and how parental socialization of emotion may explain family adjustment to this stress.
Dr. Perry-Parrish received her doctorate in Developmental and Clinical Psychology from the University of Maine. She completed her predoctoral internship training at the Children’s Hospital at Stanford & Children’s Health Council in Palo Alto, CA. She completed a postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University Division of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
