    Research Summary

Dr. Kanakry’s clinical research is focused on the investigation of the relationship between viruses and lymphomas.  Subsets of many high-grade lymphomas are associated with Epstein-Barr virus, particularly in immunocompromised patients such as those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).  With rare exception, the presence of Epstein-Barr virus in these tumors is not currently used clinically to improve diagnostic, prognostic, or therapeutic approaches.  A major aim of Dr. Kanakry’s research is to identify virus-related biomarkers in the blood that can be used for risk-stratification and response assessment in lymphoma, with the hope that this will translate to lower treatment-related toxicities and higher cure rates for these patients.  Dr. Kanakry is also currently investigating the use of virus-targeted therapies for the treatment of patients with virus-associated lymphomas and other cancers.
