Dr. Butler specializes in intraocular inflammation in addition to general ophthalmological disease. His research interests include the pathogenesis and treatment of uveitic cystoid macular edema and infectious causes of uveitis. He has a continued interest in international ophthalmology as a volunteer clinician, educator and researcher.
After graduating from Amherst College, Dr. Butler pursued medical training at McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, Canada. He then completed residency in ophthalmology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Upon graduating, he and his wife spent six months in Tamil Nadu, India, implementing a community health worker training program among a local, tribal population and offering medical and surgical care to indigent patients with eye disease. Dr. Butler obtained subspecialty training in uveitis and ocular immunology at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon.
