Characterization of organ motion in thoracic tumors; Novel radiation sensitizers in non small cell lung cancer


Russell Hales, M.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences, focuses clinical and research efforts on thoracic malignancies in the Department of Radiation Oncology. As director of Thoracic Multidisciplinary Clinic, he helps to provide an expedited treatment recommendation and counseling for patients with newly diagnosed lung and esophagus cancer by all specialists in one office visit. He is involved in the development of the Lung Cancer Center of Excellence.

    Selected Publications

    Dr. Hales research activities focus on improving the effectiveness of radiation therapy for patients with lung and esophagus cancer. His interests bridge pre-clinical models of cancer treatment with innovative therapies. By exploring the effects of hedgehog pathway signaling on tumor response to radiation treatment, Dr. Hales research group is translating pre-clinical discovery to clinical trials to improve outcomes in patients needing radiation treatment.

    He also evaluates new radiation technologies and their use in patients with lung cancer. For example, 4D MRI is being investigated as a means of more accurately tracking tumor motion with breathing, which results in improved targeting of tumor. He is also analyzes the benefit of daily image guidance in patients undergoing radiation therapy. Predictive models are being created which help personalize need for image guidance in patients undergoing therapy.
