Dr. Ana-Maria Orbai is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include rheumatology and psoriatic arthritis.

Dr. Orbai earned her M.D. from the Iuliu Hatieganu School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, in Romania. She completed internship and residency training in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University-Sinai Hospital program. Subsequently, Dr. Orbai completed her post-doctoral fellowship training in rheumatology at Johns Hopkins. During her fellowship she earned her Master in Health Sciences degree in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Orbai directs the Psoriatic Arthritis Program in the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center.  Her clinical focus is psoriatic arthritis and spodyloarthritis.

Dr. Orbai's research aims to understand psoriatic disease subtypes and improve treatment strategies for people with psoriatic arthritis. Dr. Orbai was awarded a Rheumatology Research Foundation Scientist Development award in 2014 and a Jerome L Greene Foundation Scholar award in 2018.

Research Summary

Dr. Orbai directs the Psoriatic Arthritis Program in the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center. Her research focus is characterization of psoriatic disease phenotypes and individualizing treatment strategies. The goal is to improve long-term patient outcomes in psoriatic arthritis.Dr. Orbai co-chaired the international GRAPPA-OMERACT Psoriatic Arthritis working group through their update of the PsA core outcome set for clinical trials in 2016.  She subsequently led the endorsement of the first core patient reported outcome measure for psoriatic arthritis clinical trials in 2018. Dr. Orbai has been an expert panel member for treatment recommendations for psoriatic arthritis. Dr. Orbai serves on the steering committee of Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) and on the Board of Medical Directors for the National Psoriasis Foundation.  She is a reviewer for many rheumatology journals.

Dr. Orbai contributed to the development of the 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) classification criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus with Dr. Michelle Petri in the Johns Hopkins Lupus Center.
