Background

Dr. Lois Arend is an associate professor of pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include renal pathology and transplant pathology. Dr. Arend serves as the program director of the renal pathology fellowship training program and director of clincial fellowships.

Dr. Arend earned her Ph.D. and M.D. from Michigan State University. She completed her residency in pathology and performed a fellowship in renal pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Her research interests include the mechanisms of mammalian kidney development, transplant pathology, and renal pathology.

Research Summary

Dr. Arend's laboratory studies the mechanisms of mammalian kidney development. Specifically, their studies involve various cell and molecular biology techniques to determine the role of the bioactive sphingolipid, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), in organogenesis of the kidney. Their research indicates that S1P may be involved in development of conditions such as cystic kidney disease and Meckel syndrome. They also study the pathologic aspects of other kidney disease by various morphologic techniques, including light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.
