Dr. Smith is a fellow in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Originally from Chicago, IL, he traveled to Madison, WI to obtain his bachelor of science degree in Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There, he joined the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research investigating the genomic basis of colon cancer with an interest in cancer epigenetics. He also served as the Features Editor of the Wisconsin Journal of Undergraduate Research. These experiences inspired his decision to pursue a medical career and he returned to Chicago to receive his medical doctorate at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Smith comes to Johns Hopkins after completing a five-year residency program training exclusively in head and neck surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year of training. Over the course of his training, he developed an interest in facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery through the mentorship of his faculty. While in residency, Dr. Smith authored numerous journal articles and book chapters related to complex aesthetic and reconstructive techniques. Additionally, he had the opportunity to study patient related quality-of-life measures as well as quality improvement in medical education.
At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Smith will be training with Drs. Patrick Byrne, Ira Papel, Kofi Boahene, and Lisa Ishii to further concentrate his clinical interests in facial aesthetic surgery, facial reconstruction following cancer resection and traumatic injuries, and facial reanimation options for patients with facial paralysis. His long-term career goals include dedicated research related to major head and neck reconstructive surgery as well as facial reanimation techniques for those affected by facial nerve pathologies. Outside of work, Dr. Smith is an avid reader and a student of guitar.
