Molecular mechanisms of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE); Age-related macular degeneration
Noriko Esumi, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. She started her career as a pediatric oncologist in Japan. While she found treating children with cancer enormously rewarding, she became increasingly aware of the importance of basic research in understanding disease better and treating patients effectively. This experience led her to study basic science in the US. After working in the field of cancer biology, Dr. Esumi decided to become a molecular biologist in eye research. Her focus is on gene regulation in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), with the goal of learning more about the causes and progression of age-related macular degeneration.
Dr. Esumi received her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Kyoto, Japan. Following her pediatrics residency at that same university, she joined the pediatrics medical staff at Akashi City Hospital in Akashi, Japan. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas and was a visiting researcher at the National Eye Institute. Dr. Esumi joined the Wilmer faculty as a research associate in 1997.
