Biography

Assistant Professor of Oncology

Oncology Medical Information Officer, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins

Dr. Miller, a pioneer in health-related information technology, is poised to make Hopkins’ Kimmel Cancer Center a frontrunner not only in breakthrough medical advances in oncology and cutting edge treatment offerings, as it already is, but also in 21st Century methods of communicating critical medical information to health providers and patients.

“My job is to be a liaison between the oncology faculty and various Information Technology (IT) departments at Hopkins for projects related to IT and clinical care,” says Dr. Miller, who represents the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center as a ‘physician champion’ of Epic, Hopkins’ new integrated electronic health record (HER) system designed to create a single, unified patient record system for the entire enterprise.

This massive overhaul will take the various ‘homegrown’ electronic systems and untold mounds of paper files and combine them into a single EHR system. “All clinical data will soon be available at the point of care,” Dr. Miller explains.

While the Federal Government has required the move to EHRs, Dr. Miller sees it as more than that. “It gives better patient care, and better care coordination. Before it became a mandate, I had an interest in it,” he says.

Dr. Miller’s appreciation of electronic communication as it relates to medicine extends well beyond EHRs. He boasts a large following on Twitter, and his blog on oncology-related topics is widely read both by professional and lay audiences. Recently, he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Cancer.Net, a patient information website for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Miller is an advocate for strong communication between physicians and patients, both electronically and in-person. “The most important thing for patients is to spend time understanding their diagnosis and making sure that all of their questions are answered,” he says. “Even when patients come to me trying to understand what the latest and best treatment option is for their condition, I’m still very interested in their opinion and how they would like to proceed.”

Dr. Miller is active in the social media space, including blogging at ehr.ascoexchange.org; posting updates to Twitter on a variety of oncology and health IT topics; and podcasting for Journal of Oncology Practice and Cancer.Net.
