Biography

Emily Boss, MD, MPH, is an assistant professor with the Johns Hopkins Department of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery and an associate faculty member within the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. She completed her undergraduate education in Fine Arts at Northwestern University. She completed her general surgery internship at the University of California Los Angeles, her Otolaryngology residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, her pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Seattle Childrens Hospital, and her masters in public health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

She maintains an active clinical practice focusing on general pediatric otolaryngology, pediatric airway and sleep disorders, complex pediatric sinusitis, nasal speech and velopharyngeal insufficiency, and head and neck vascular anomalies. Her research expertise, with which she has authored more than 40 publications and book chapters, relates to patient experience of care, healthcare equity and quality, and surgical outcomes and utilization.

Dr. Bosss research interests focus on patient and family experience of care, provider-family communication, healthcare disparities, and surgical healthcare quality and utilization. She has authored or co-authored over 40 publications and chapters.

Dr. Boss serves as the director for patient experience within the Department of Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins. She is an invited participant and speaker for institutional and national initiatives focused on patient and family-centered care.

Memberships

Dr. Emily Boss is closely involved in defining and promoting healthcare quality through the American Academy of Otolaryngology as well as the American College of Surgeons. She serves as an active member of the patient safety and quality improvement committee for both the AAO-HNSF and the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, and she serves as a quality liaison for the Academys 3P Physician Payment Policy workgroup.

She is one of three pediatric otolaryngologists to formally participate in the active and ongoing development of the ACS NSQIP (National Surgery Quality Improvement Program) pediatric, the premier quality initiative set forth by pediatric surgical specialists.
