Research Summary

Dr. Shafi’s research focuses on developing methods to measure and estimate kidney function, particularly in patients with kidney failure on dialysis.

Supported by a Career Development Award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Dr. Shafi is conducting studies to develop methods to measure residual kidney function in dialysis patients and to identify ways to prevent loss of residual kidney function.

Dr. Shafi’s research also involves the Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for ESRD (CHOICE) Study, comparative effectiveness research in dialysis patients as part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) Network and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Study.
