Biography

Dr. Tammy Brady is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She provides care for children with all types of kidney problems, from microscopic hematuria to kidney transplant recipients. Dr. Brady serves as the medical director of the pediatric hypertension program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

After graduating magna cum laude from Boston College with a degree in psychology and philosophy, Dr. Brady earned her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where she was chief resident. Dr. Brady performed her fellowship in pediatric nephrology at Johns Hopkins. As part of her fellowship training, she received a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Brady joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2008. After joining the faculty, she returned to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was awarded a Ph.D. in clinical investigation.

Her research interests include pediatric hypertension; specifically, she is interested in identifying the factors that influence detecting elevated blood pressure and hypertension in children in the primary-care setting as well as determining the effects hypertension can have on the heart in children. This important research has fostered collaborations with pediatricians in the Harriet Lane Clinic and the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.

Dr. Brady is the recipient of numerous research grants and awards, the latest of which includes a grant from the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). This ASN Norman Siegel Research Scholar Grant Award, along with a Professional Development Award from the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland and a grant award from the Thomas Wilson Sanitarium for the Children of Baltimore City, is funding a longitudinal study of factors impacting regression of left ventricular hypertrophy in children with primary hypertension.

    Research Summary

    Dr. Brady’s research interests focus on pediatric hypertension. She is currently investigating the longitudinal effects of obesity and other clinical factors on the heart in hypertensive children. Her research to date has led to the development of a multidisciplinary obesity hypertension clinic for children and adolescents.

    Dr. Brady is the recipient of numerous research grants and awards, including the Clinician Scientist Award from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Previous grant awards include an NIH/Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research KL2 Clinical Research Scholar Award, the American Society of Nephrology Norman Siegel Research Scholar Grant Award, the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland Professional Development Award and mini-grant awards, the American Heart Association Clinical Research Program Award, among others.

    She is co-Investigator of two NIH funded studies, the Chronic Kidney Disease in Childhood (CKiD) cohort study and the CKD: Hypertension Adherence in Teens (CHAT) study. She is also a collaborating investigator in the NIH-funded NEPTUNE (NEPhrotic Syndrome STUdy NEtwork) study. In addition, Dr. Brady is an active member of both the CKiD Cardiovascular subcommittee and the NEPTUNE Cardiovascular Outcomes committee.
