Dr. Boland is an Associate Professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and has sub-specialty training in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. He is available for consultations on both glaucoma and cataracts. He sees patients at the Green Spring Station office of the Wilmer Eye Institute.
Dr. Boland received a B.S. with distinction in electrical and computer engineering and earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa, annually ranked as one of the top training programs in the country. He received his glaucoma training at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. His current research efforts include medical informatics in ophthalmology and computer-assisted diagnosis.
Dr. Boland is also the director of the residency training program at the Wilmer Eye Institute. In this role, he is committed to ensuring that Wilmer trains future ophthalmologists who will be leaders in all aspects of the field.
In addition to his roles in patient care, research, and education, Dr. Boland is also the Director of Information Technology for the Wilmer Eye Institute. He therefore directs the department's efforts related to digital image management and electronic health records.

Research & Publications
Dr. Boland's current research efforts include medical informatics in ophthalmology and computer-assisted diagnosis. Specific projects include combined analysis of optic nerve structure and function in glaucoma and evaluation of personal health records to improve adherence with glaucoma medications.
