Biography

Dr. Boland is an Associate Professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and has sub-specialty training in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. He is available for consultations on both glaucoma and cataracts. He sees patients at the Green Spring Station and Bel Air locations of the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Dr. Boland received a B.S. with distinction in electrical and computer engineering and earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa, annually ranked as one of the top training programs in the country. He received his glaucoma training at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. His current research efforts include medical informatics in ophthalmology and computer-assisted diagnosis.

In addition to his roles in patient care and research, Dr. Boland is also the Director of Information Technology for the Wilmer Eye Institute. In that role, he directs the department's efforts related to digital image management and electronic health records.

    Dr. Boland''s current research efforts include medical informatics in ophthalmology and computer-assisted diagnosis. Specific projects include combined analysis of optic nerve structure and function in glaucoma and evaluation of personal health records to improve adherence with glaucoma medications.
