Biography

Dr. Stephen Maxwell Milner is a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatrics and dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment and reconstructive surgery of burn wounds.

He serves as director of the Michael D. Hendrix Burn Research Center, director of the Johns Hopkins Burn Center and surgical director of the Johns Hopkins Wound Center. Additionally, he acts as chief of burn surgery and chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. Milner received his medical degree from Guy’s Hospital Medical School at the University of London in 1977. He trained in general surgery in London and at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He also served in the British Army as a lieutenant colonel during Operation Desert Storm. Subsequently, he undertook research at the Chemical and Biological Defence Establishment in Porton Down, England. Dr. Milner is an honorary civilian consultant advisor to the British Army in plastic surgery and burns. Before joining Johns Hopkins, Milner completed a residency in plastic surgery, as well as a fellowship in burn research, at the Shriners' Burn Institute in Galeston. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2006.

His research interests include fluid resuscitation in thermal injury, burn sepsis and antimicrobial peptides, and antidotes to chemical warfare agents.

Dr. Milner is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has written over 100 peer reviewed articles and numerous other publications, is founding editor of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and ePlasty, and serves as editor of the Journal of Surgical Radiology. He has received numerous honors of distinction and lectureships, and in 2012 was inducted into the Miller-Caulson Academy of Excellence.
