Biography

Dr. Clifton O. Bingham is the Dircector of the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center and Director of the Center for Patient Centered Outcomes Research in Rheumatology.  He received his medical training at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he also completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine.  He completed Fellowship training in both Rheumatology and in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.  From 1999-2004, he was at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, where he directed the Arthritis Clinics at Bellevue Hospital and founded and directed the Seligman Center for Advanced Therapeutics. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2005 and now directs the integrated clinical and research operations of the Arthritis Center, which focuses on individualized patient centered care for people living with the various forms of inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.  His clinical expertise is in the evaluation and management of patients with rheuamtoid arthritis.  He was a member of the international group that revised the classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis, permitting the diagnosis of earlier disease to facilitate treatment with disease modifying agents. His research expertise is in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical trials of therapies for rheumatic diseases, and he is a member of the Executive Committee for the international Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Clinical Trials (OMERACT) group. His research now focuses on outcome measure development and assessment, particularly in the area of patient reported outcomes (PROs). He founded and directs the Center for Patient Centered Outcomes Research in Rheumatology to faciliate the further incorporation of outcomes that are most valued by patients into the routine care of people living with arthritis, autoimmune, and other rheumatic disease. He is the recipient of two awards from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to evaluate the impact of integrating PROs into clinical practice settings.
