Biography

Dr. Kathleen Burns is an associate professor of pathology and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include hematologic pathology, hematopathology, leukemia, lymphoma and pathology. She is a member of the Institute of Genetic Medicine's predoctoral training program in human genetics.

Dr. Burns received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Southern Mississippi. She earned her M.D. and Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and performed a fellowship in pathology at Johns Hopkins.

Her research interests include the roles of transposable elements and other mobile DNAs in human disease.

Dr. Burns received a Career Award for Medical Scientists (CAMS) from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in 2008.

    Research Summary

    Dr. Burns is a physician-scientist and practicing pathologist who studies roles of transposable elements and other mobile DNAs in human disease, with an emphasis on cancer development. There is compelling evidence that these poorly understood sequences can contribute to genomic instability and mRNA transcript alterations in the context of neoplasia; her research team believes inherited insertions also may create predispositions to disease.

    Projects in her lab include:

    1. The development of one-sided PCR based assays to map mobile DNAs in the human genome;
    2. Finding evidence for somatic insertions of mobilized DNAs in cancers, and exploring potential clinical markers and mechanisms underlying this instability;
    3. Describing common inherited transposon insertion polymorphisms in cancer patients and assessing whether these structural variations contribute to cancer susceptibility or tumor progression.
