Background

My primary research interest is to better understand the experience, measurement and treatment of pain in persons with a history of or current substance use disorders. To this aim, I have a NIDA funded career development award to quantify analgesia and abuse potential of standard intravenous opioid medications given to persons maintained on methadone or buprenorphine. I am developing a novel experimental pain testing battery to be used in future clinical trials aimed at optimizing pain treatment in this population. Experimental pain techniques utilized in my lab include (not an exhaustive list) cold pressor testing, thermal pain testing, algometer pressure pain testing, mechanical suprathreshold pain testing, and conditioned pain modulation. I have also used these techniques in an attempt to model prospectively the development of opioid induced hyperalgesia and opioid withdrawal associated hyperalgesia.  My second main area of interest is in developing novel medications for the treatment of substance use disorders; and I have collaborated on single and multisite clinical trials examining a cocaine vaccine and topiramate for the treatment of cocaine use disorders, tramadol extended release for the treatment of opioid withdrawal, and zolpidem for the treatment of cannabis use disorders. Lastly, I am interested in better assessment of opioid withdrawal in persons with a history of opioid use disorders and in persons maintained on opioids for the treatment of chronic pain without a history of addiction. To this end, I validated the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (COWS) and developed a comprehensive assessment battery to look at spontaneous opioid withdrawal.
