Background

Dr. Martin A. Makary is the surgical director of the Johns Hopkins Multidisciplinary Pancreas Clinic, the chief of minimally invasive pancreatic surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University and a professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has pioneered new pancreas operations at Johns Hopkins, including laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy, laparoscopic Whipple procedure and laparoscopic islet autotransplantation to prevent postoperative diabetes. Dr. Makary is board certified in general surgery and among the few highest-volume laparoscopic pancreas surgeons in the United States. He practices out of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center in Baltimore, Md. 

Dr. Makary has expertise in various kinds of surgery, including abdominal surgery, bile duct surgery, gallbladder surgery, geriatric surgery and pancreas surgery, as well as advanced laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, frey procedure and whipple procedure. In addition, Dr. Makary has pancreatic expertise in distal pancreatectomy, pancreatic auto islet transplant, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. He specializes in other cancers as well, such as gastrointestinal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, stomach tumors and surgical oncology. 

Dr. Makary earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. He completed a residency in general surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center. 

Dr. Makary is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He served in leadership roles at the United Nations’ World Health Organization Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative. In 2014, Becker’s Magazine named him one of America’s 40 Smartest People in Healthcare.

Dr. Makary has research interests in operative risk assessment in the elderly, cancer therapy, minimally invasive surgery, health services research, occupational safety, diabetes and obesity. Dr. Makary has contributed to various publications, presented nationally on quality and safety in health care and the future of medicine, and is a frequent television medical commentator. Dr. Makary was the lead author of the original scientific articles describing the surgical checklist and the author of the New York Times bestseller, Unaccountable, a book about physician-led efforts to increase transparency and improve quality in healthcare.
