Dr. Tina Lee Cheng is a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Cheng serves as the chair of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Bayview, vice chair of the Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics, and division chief of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

She has a joint appointment in the Department of Population, Family, and Reproductive Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Her clinical, teaching and research efforts focus on child health disparities, violence prevention and primary care models to promote positive youth development and family health. She has developed award-winning models of primary care to address the needs of vulnerable children, adolescents and families.

Dr. Cheng earned her M.D. from the Brown University School of Medicine and her M.P.H from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed her residencies at San Francisco General Hospital and the University of California, Berkeley. She performed a fellowship in general academic pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

An author of more than 100 publications, Dr. Cheng has been the principal investigator on numerous federal and foundation grants (NICHD, CDC, MCHB, NIMHD) and has conducted randomized trials of primary care, emergency department, and community-based youth development interventions with low-income children, adolescents, and families. She co-founded Centro SOL: Johns Hopkins Center for Salud/(Health) and Opportunity for Latinos and serves on its steering committee.

Dr. Cheng is past president of the Academic Pediatric Association (APA), current chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Pediatric Research and liaison to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Federal Government Affairs. She received the Job Louis Smith Award for community pediatrics from the AAP and the 2012 APA Public Policy and Advocacy Award. more

Research & Publications

Research Summary

Dr. Cheng’s research involves understanding child, parent, clinician and community perspectives on health, and developing and evaluating innovative approaches to improving health for vulnerable children and adolescents.

She has been involved in the evaluation of innovative primary care models and policy issues on the future of primary care, including the Future of Pediatric Education (FOPE II) project, the Health Resources and Services Administration Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatrics Residency Review and Redesign Project (R3P).

She is currently a principal investigator for the NIH-funded DC Baltimore Research Center on Child Health Disparities with Howard University and Children's National Medical Center.
