Dr. Bernard Jaar is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He holds a joint appointment in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His areas of clinical expertise include nephrology and chronic renal failure. 

Dr. Jaar earned his M.D. from Faculte de Medecine et de Pharmacie. He completed a nephrology residency at Tenon Hospital and an internal medicine residency at Graduate Hospital. He performed a fellowship at UFR de Medecine Saint-Antoine, a fellowship in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public of Health, and a fellowship in nephrology at Johns Hopkins. 

His research interests include epidemiology of chronic kidney disease, survival in dialysis patients, peripheral vascular disease and lead nephropathy.

Dr. Jaar was recognized by the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland with a Volunteer of the Year Award in 2013. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Society of Nephrology, American Society of Nephrology and the American Medical Association.

Research Summary

Dr. Jaar is interested in the conduct of epidemiologic studies in the field of end-stage renal disease and its related complications. His personal research interest is currently focused on outcome studies of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and morbidity and mortality of ESRD patients by dialysis modality. In addition to leading the Cardiovascular Endpoint Committee of the CHOICE study, he is involved in several research projects within the Division of Nephrology and also at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, and the Department of Environmental Health at the School of Public Health.
