Dr Robert Stevens is a fellowship-trained, board-certified specialist in critical care medicine, neurocritical care, and anesthesiology. He serves as an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with appointments in Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology. His areas of clinical expertise include critical care medicine, trauma and traumatic brain injury, neurological critical care, surgical intensive care, neurology, neurosurgery, cerebrovascular diseases and stroke, epilepsy, and neuroimaging
Dr Stevens has received postdoctoral research training in molecular neurobiology, cellular electrophysiology, advanced magnetic resonance imaging, and brain mapping. He holds faculty appointments in the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering and the FM Kirby Center for Functional Neuroimaging. Dr Stevens’ group investigates biomarkers of neural injury and repair following insults such as trauma, stroke, anoxia and sepsis, with a fundamental goal of identifying transformative interventions to promote neurologic recovery. He is the principal investigator of the Neuroimaging for Coma Emergence and Recovery (NICER) project, an international consortium which is analyzing the brain connectome in patients recovering from brain injury. Other projects explore molecular and cellular aspects of recovery in experimental brain injury, including genetic determinants, neuro-immunological responses, neural plasticity, and cellular regeneration.

Research & Publications
Dr. Stevens’ research centers on quantitative approaches to injury and repair within the central nervous system.
His group seeks to generate a comprehensive anatomical and functional map of neural injury and repair following insults such as trauma, stroke, anoxia and sepsis. Several projects have evaluated the relationship between critical illness and central or peripheral nervous system dysfunction. Ongoing projects deploy quantitative brain mapping to probe recovery of consciousness and cognitive function in patients who have experienced acute neurologic insults from trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest and sepsis.
Dr. Stevens is the principal investigator in a study funded by the Brain Science Institute to track recovery after severe traumatic brain injury using multiparametric MRI and tablet-based neuropsychological assessments. He leads the Neuroimaging for Coma Emergence and Recovery (NICER) project, a multi-site, prospective observational cohort study of patients with severe traumatic brain injury who are serially evaluated with MRI and detailed cognitive phenotype analysis. The overarching goal is to generate transformative interventions for neurological recovery.
