Background

Dr. John E. Tis is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

A specialist in pediatric orthopaedics and sports medicine, Dr. Tis is currently one of the few fellowship-trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeons who is also board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Sports Medicine. In addition to ACL tears and other sports injuries, he also enjoys treating a wide variety of pediatric deformitites including hip dysplasia.

He is an expert in performing arthroscopic surgical procedures on the ankles, hips, shoulders and knees, including ACL reconstructions. He treats injuries that include ACL tears, hip and shoulder dislocations (dysplasia) and labral tears.

Dr. Tis has a special interest in treating Perthes Disease and is a founding member of the International Perthes Study Group (IPSG). In addition, he also treats orthopaedic issues related to conditions including scoliosis, cerebral palsy, osteochondritis dessicans, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and spondylolisthesis.

Dr. Tis earned his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins and a pediatric orthopaedics surgery fellowship at UCSD Rady Children's Hospital.

Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins faculty, Dr. Tis served for four years as the Director of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

While in the military, he developed an orthopaedic sports medicine practice and became an expert in arthroscopically treating orthopaedic injuries and disorders. He also treated complex pediatric deformities.

Experienced in treating high-energy war wounds and limb defects, Dr. Tis served as the Chief of Orthopaedics at Ibn Sina Hospital (“Baghdad ER”) during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2011, he returned to Afghanistan and served for six months.

He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine.

Dr. Tis is a member of numerous Professional Societies to include the Scoliosis Research Society, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and was listed in Americas Top Doctors in 2007.
