Biography

Dr. Katarzyna J. Macura is a radiologist of Sibley Memorial Hospital, as well as a professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine department of radiology and radiological science and a professor of oncology and urology at Johns Hopkins University. She is board certified in diagnostic radiology and practices out of Sibley’s Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic in Washington, D.C. and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where she is the director of a clinical and research prostate imaging program that she established with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Dr. Macura has an expertise in diagnostic radiology, image-guided biopsies, MRI and prostate cancer. 

Dr. Macura earned her medical degree from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland. She completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at the Medical College of Georgia and a fellowship in cross-sectional body imaging at Johns Hopkins University. 

Dr. Macura is the president of the Maryland Radiological Society and the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Radiology, as well as a member of other national and international radiology organizations. Dr. Macura has been voted among the nation’s top five women’s imaging specialists by the readers of Medical Imaging Magazine. She served as a president of the American Association for Women Radiologists in 2005 and was named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by Hopkins radiology residents in 2006. Dr. Macura was also named the Honored Educator by the Radiological Society of North America in 2012 and 2014. 

Dr. Macura serves as a reviewer for numerous journals such as Radiology, Radiographics, AJR and the Journal of Urology. She has research interests in MRI, genitourinary imaging, pelvic imaging, prostate cancer imaging and image-guided interventions. She has received an RSNA Seed Grant for her work on MRI in female urinary incontinence, the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance and the ARRS Phillips Scholarship to pursue translational research in prostate cancer. She has contributed to various research, publications and presentations as well.

    Research Summary

    Dr. Macura’s research focuses on genitourinary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dr. Macura established a clinical and research prostate imaging program at Hopkins with focus on MRI applications in men with prostate cancer managed in active surveilance. She is Assistant Director for the Imaging Translational Program of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
