Dr. Mesfin A. Lemma is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He serves as the division chief of Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery and director of Spine Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Lemma is also the assistant residency director for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

His clinical interests include the treatment of spine pathologies using techniques ranging from minimally invasive spine surgery to complex spine reconstruction. His research efforts focus predominantly on spinal deformity and spinal problems in the elderly.

Dr. Lemma received his undergraduate degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and went on to complete an M.D. at Case Western’s School of Medicine, where he was elected into the AOA Medical Honor Society. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and concluded his training in 2003 with a prestigious spinal reconstructive fellowship at Hopkins under the guidance of world-renowned surgeon John Kostuik, M.D.

He joined the Johns Hopkins team at Good Samaritan in 2003 as the group’s first spinal reconstructive surgeon, and became division chief in 2009.

Dr. Lemma has been hailed by both U.S. News and World Report’s and U.S. Castle Connolly in their lists of “Top Doctors in the US” and has been named among the “Top 100 Spine Surgeons in the US” by Becker’s Healthcare. He has published several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society.
