Dr. Alexandra Valsamakis is a professor of pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She holds a joint secondary appointment in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and serves as director of Clinical Virology and Molecular Microbiology Laboratories in the Department of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
She received an M.D. and Ph.D. (microbiology) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After a residency in clinical pathology at the University of California-San Diego, she completed two fellowships at Johns Hopkins, one molecular virology and a second in medical microbiology.
Dr. Valsamakis’ research focuses on the detection, identification, and management of viral infections.
She is president of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology and has served as chair of the Infectious Diseases Subdivision of the Association for Molecular Pathology. She has contributed to the field of molecular pathology in a number of different capacities including editorial board memberships (Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Manual of Clinical Microbiology), ad hoc reviewer (Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Journal of Clinical Virology, Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, Clinical Diagnostic and Laboratory Immunology, Journal of Viral Hepatitis), committee member/co-author “Quantitative Methods for Infectious Diseases” (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute), grant reviewer (member of IDM-B-12, an SBIR study section), meeting and course organizer (Association for Molecular Pathology Annual Meetings, 2006, 2007, 2015, 2016, and AMP/AACC course “Molecular Pathology Essentials: Principles and Practice”, 2008, 2010, 2012), participant in numerous industrial advisory boards, invited lecturer, and game show hostess.

Dr. Valsamakis' research focuses ondefining the performance characteristics of new virologic tests (self-designed or commercial), determining the clinical utility of virologic tests, and understanding virologic disease through the use of diagnostic tests.
