Biography

Dr. Bruce Alan Wasserman is an Assistant Professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Radiology and Radiological and serves as Director of Diagnostic Neurovascular Imaging. His clinical focus is general radiology, with emphasis on neuroradiology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Dr. Wasserman completed his B.S. in biomedical engineering in 1986 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic University and his M.D. in 1991 at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. After an internship in internal medicine at the Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester, he took a postdoctoral fellowship at the Case Western Reserve Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Mt. Auburn Hospital, a Harvard University affiliate, and, in 1999, he finished a fellowship in neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins.

During a subsequent training program in image science at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Wasserman joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins as an Assistant Professor of Radiology, and rose to the rank of Associate Professor in 2005.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Wasserman has been principal investigator of several extramural research projects dealing with MRI applications, arteriography, multiple sclerosis and strokes. He is board certified in neuroradiology and diagnostic radiology, has published more than 60 journal articles, and has served on review boards National Institutes of Health and on various committees of organizations relating to MRI applications.

    Research Summary

Dr. Wasserman has focused much of his work on using MRI to evaluate the carotid artery in order to prevent stroke. Many of his publications have focused on understanding the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis through MR imaging. He is also actively involved in the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, a multicenter trial exploring the progression of subclinical atherosclerotic disease, in addition to several other multicenter studies of carotid atherosclerosis. Although Dr. Wasserman’s clinical work spans all areas of neuroradiology, he is frequently consulted for his work on the spine in both research and clinical settings.
