Dr. Bruce Wasserman is Professor of Radiology in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Director of Translational Neuroradiology, and Director of the Neurovascular Imaging Center.
Dr. Wasserman earned his B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He studied medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he stayed to complete an internship in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital. He spent one year working on advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for vascular imaging at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland. During this time he became increasingly interested in using MRI to learn more about the structure of atherosclerotic plaque, work he would later continue at the NIH while in the Imaging Sciences Training Program. After completing a residency in radiology at Mount Auburn Hospital in Harvard Medical School, Dr. Wasserman spent 2 years in a neuroradiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and remained on faculty following the completion of his fellowship.
Dr. Wasserman has focused much of his work on using MRI to evaluate cervical and intracranial vessels in order to prevent stroke. Many of his publications have focused on understanding the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis through MRI imaging. He has served as the principal investigator of several population-based MRI studies of both carotid and intracranial atherosclerotic plaque, including the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) study, and the Vascular Aging: The Link that Bridges Age to Atherosclerosis (VALIDATE) study. His work is recognized as having contributed to our understanding of risk factors for unstable features of atherosclerotic plaque and to our ability to predict stroke risk beyond simply measuring narrowing by angiography. Dr. Wasserman currently serves as Director of Diagnostic Neurovascular Imaging at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and receives referrals for a wide variety of neurovascular diseases. He also works to facilitate translational research in his role as Director of Translational Neuroradiology. Although Dr. Wasserman’s clinical work spans all areas of neuroradiology, he is frequently consulted for his work on the spine in both research and clinical settings.

Research & Publications
Dr. Wasserman has focused much of his work on using MRI to evaluate the carotid artery in order to prevent stroke. Many of his publications have focused on understanding the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis through MR imaging. He is also actively involved in the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, a multicenter trial exploring the progression of subclinical atherosclerotic disease, in addition to several other multicenter studies of carotid atherosclerosis. Although Dr. Wasserman’s clinical work spans all areas of neuroradiology, he is frequently consulted for his work on the spine in both research and clinical settings.
