Research focuses on theories and projects that have the potential to improve function and reduce disability for persons with chronic illness and injury. Specific research projects have focused on:

Factors that influence the development of chronic pain in persons with occupational musculoskeletal injuries, rheumatic disease, spinal cord injury or limb loss

Development of cognitive-behavioral and self-management interventions that prevent the development of, or provide treatment for, secondary conditions following trauma and disability

Factors that influence rehabilitation outcomes, specifically the role of collaborative care models and self-management.

These projects emphasize the importance of patient-centered care models, self-management by patients and the use of motivational interviewing by providers. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Defense and several foundations.
