Dr. Trish M. Perl is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She holds joint appointments in pathology and epidemiology at the School of Medicine as well as in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Her main health interests are influenza and pandemic influenza planning, including patient and health care worker safety.

Renowned for her innovation and research in infections and resistant organisms, Dr. Perl has raised the bar for The Johns Hopkins Hospital's Infection Control and Prevention Program. She started the Department of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control at the Johns Hopkins Hospital website, helping to promote the group’s role in educating the community.

Dr. Perl is the recipient of the SHEA (Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America) Young Investigator and Mentor Award. In 2006, she was nominated as the first woman president of SHEA. In addition, she has been a principle researcher for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on health care associated with infections.

She also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Infection Control and is a reviewer for Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Perl has written or collaborated over 200 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Perl received her B.A. and medical degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and master’s in science from McGill University in Montreal, Canada for epidemiology and biostatistics. She completed a residency in internal medicine at McGill University and a fellowship in infectious diseases and clinical epidemiology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. more

Dr. Perl has extensive research experience in the field of health care-associated infections and resistant and epidemiologically significant organisms. She is recognized globally for her innovation and research in the field and the use of research knowledge in the health care setting.

She has served as a principal and co-principal investigator on multiple studies funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Veteran’s Affairs Administration during her career.
