Biography

Dr. Peter Burger is a professor of pathology, neurological surgery and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include brain tumors and pathology.

He and his colleagues were the first to identify pilomyxoid astrocytomas (PMA), a type of brain cancer largely seen in children, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1999.

Dr. Burger serves as director of the oncologic neuropathology service and director of surgical neuropathology consultation services at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

He is internationally known for his work on adult and pediatric brain tumors. He is a leading authority in the interpretation of surgical specimens of brain and spinal cord tumors, and has extensive experience in interpreting stereotactic needle biopsies. He reviews more than 1,500 difficult brain tumor cases sent to him in consultation yearly.

Dr. Burger earned his M.D. from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He completed his residency at the Duke University School of Medicine and performed a fellowship in neuropathology at Duke University.

His research interests include surgical pathology and the molecular biology of brain tumors.

Dr. Burger is the author of two widely used textbooks and more than 200 scientific articles. He serves as chairman of the Neuropathology Review Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group, the major national organization devoted to developing new treatments for childhood cancer. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Neuro-Oncology in 2011.

    Research Summary

Dr. Burger's principal interest is in surgical neuropathology of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. For both, he is seeking the best methods by which these lesions can be diagnosed, and their biological behavior projected. His team's current work explores molecular basis of gliomas, specifically molecular or cytogenetic abnormalities that correlate with tumor type and prognosis. They are involved in a multi-institutional study of the pathological cytogenetic, and molecular features of gliomas, particularly those that can be used to distinguish oligodendrogliomas from histologically similar lesions such as astrocytoma. They are also categorizing the cytogenetic and molecular features of pediatric astrocytomas and to subdivide medulloblastomas on the basis of their cytogenetic and molecular anatomy. With joint appointments in oncology and neurosurgery, Dr. Burger works closely with these disciplines in the evaluation of new therapies for CNS tumors. His team has an active consult service for the interpretation of surgical specimens for brain and spinal cord tumors and other lesions.
