Research Interests

Application of molecular genetic techniques to the early detection of head and neck cancers; The molecular-genetic progression of head and neck cancer; Thyroid neoplasia

Dr. William Henry Westra is a professor of pathology, oncology and otolaryngology - head and neck surgery and an associate professor of dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His areas of clinical expertise include pathology. Dr. Westra serves as the director of the Head and Neck Pathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology.

Dr. Westra established the Head and Neck Pathology Laboratory in 1995, when he joined the Division of Cardiorespiratory Pathology to take part in clinical studies using molecular biology to detect and diagnose head and neck cancers. Work in this promising area is being tested in several multi-institutional clinical trials. He also initiated the laboratory''s diagnostic service.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Florida College of Medicine, and completed his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He performed a fellowship in oncologic pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a chief clinical fellowship in surgical pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Westra's research interests include the application of molecular genetic techniques to the early detection of head and neck cancers.

Dr. Westra is the co-author of Surgical Pathology Dissection, which covers current methods and techniques for the assessment of complex head and neck resections. He directs the Pathology Core Facility for the NIH-funded Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Cancer of the Head and Neck.

    Research Summary

Dr. Westra’s research focuses on the detection of head and neck cancers. He is an expert in tumors of the upper respiratory tract, and is also interested in thyroid pathology. As an investigator for the Johns Hopkins Head and Neck Cancer SPORE, he studies the role of HPV (human papilloma virus) in cancer development and how the virus is transmitted to the upper airway.
