Dr. Palmer is Past-President of the Dysphagia Research Society and Member-at-Large of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. He served on the Motor Function, Speech, and Rehabilitation Study Section at the NIH. He serves on the editorial boards of the journal Dysphagia and the Archives of PM&R. He has received awards from the NIH, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the International Association for Disability and Oral Health, and the PM&R Education and Research Foundation. Dr. Palmer is a visiting professor at Fujita Health University (Japan), an honorary member of the Japanese Society for Dysphagia Rehabilitation, and a Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Palmer has published a book on living with spinal cord injury (in second edition), 26 book chapters, 10 invited reviews, and 49 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He recently co-authored a book with Sara Palmer for spouse caregivers of people with stroke. The book is in press and will be available in the spring of 2011.
