Research Interests

Dr. Brower’s primary research focus is on the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a severe, life-threatening condition triggered by pneumonia, other severe infections, pancreatitis, trauma, and aspiration. One of his areas of interest is in the safe and effective use of mechanical ventilation in ARDS. He was a member of the NIH Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network (ARDSNet) and chaired two of the ARDSNet’s multicenter clinical trials. He is currently the Steering Committee Chair for the NIH Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network. Background

Dr. Brower is a specialist in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of all forms of acute respiratory failure, including asthma, pneumonia, C.O.P.D., and the acute respiratory distress syndrome. He has extensive experience in the management of other life-threatening conditions such as gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diabetic ketoacidosis, and shock from sepsis, hypovolemia, and heart disease.

He earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins. He completed his residency and performed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Brower's research interests include ventilation-associated lung injury, ARDS, and clinical and translational research in acute lung injury.

He served as reviewer for the Johns Hopkins Hospital 2015-2016 Antibiotics Guidelines. He has been recognized with several honors, including the Departmental Teaching Award from the Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Critical Care Assembly of the American Thoracic Society. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
