BILL FINE (President
and General Manager, WBAL-TV):
Sometimes, even
when excellence is staring us in the face, it becomes old news. In the
case of Johns Hopkins, both the hospital and the university are once
again at the top of the chart of this nation's elite institutions and
deserve the recognition.
Sidney Kimmel, a
billionaire from New York with no ties to Hopkins or Baltimore, recognized
Hopkins' pursuit of excellence and donated $150 million to their visionary
$2-billion fundraising campaign. Hopkins' vision includes much-needed
renovation and development of their east side neighborhood, as well
as modernization of their university campus.
As with the University
of Maryland's medical systems anchoring west side redevelopment, there's
no question that the city benefits from Hopkins' presence, and now,
these new plans for major improvements.
One thing for sure:
the students, faculty and staff of the venerable Hopkins institutions
deserve facilities and surroundings that match the excellence they have
become known for around the world.
