Johns Hopkins doctors and scientists and other national experts are meeting to discuss the most up-to-date information on smallpox, new strategies for controlling emerging infectious diseases and issues of health care worker safety at the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America 13th Annual Scientific Meeting on April 5-8, 2003, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

Presentations will include the latest findings and recommendations for bioterrorism preparedness at hospitals, reducing hospital-based infections, preventing antibiotic resistance and other topics vital to insuring the health and safety of patients and health care workers alike.

"Controlling outbreaks of infectious disease and protecting patients and health care workers in hospitals and clinics is a complex, ever-changing challenge," said Trish Perl, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins and organizer of this year's meeting. "This meeting gives doctors, nurses, administrators and others the information they need to confront that challenge head on."

Johns Hopkins experts will present on the following topics:

Infection Control Approaches to Smallpox, by Trish Perl, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of Johns Hopkins Hospital epidemiology and infection control. Perl will describe the infection control measures needed to prevent spread of smallpox to other patients and health care workers. Saturday, April 5, 2003, 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Preventing Antibiotic Resistance, by Arjun Srinivasan, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and director of the antibiotic management program at Johns Hopkins. Srinivasan will review the best way to use antibiotics to control infection while also preventing the development of new, resistant strains of infectious diseases. He will also report on innovative approaches for reducing hospital-based infections. Sunday, April 6, 2003, 7:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., and Tuesday, April 8, 2003, 7:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m.
