Hopkins, MAMSI To Renew Partnership; Groups Agree To New Two-Year Contract

Hopkins and Mid Atlantic Medical Service Inc. (MAMSI) announced today they have agreed to a new two-year contract, thereby securing The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine specialty physician group and The Johns Hopkins Community Physicians primary care physicians group as participating providers for all MAMSI health plans and insurance policies. The new contract will extend through 2004.

"We are pleased to have successfully resolved our contract negotiations and are enthusiastic about our relationship with MAMSI going forward," said Patricia M.C. Brown, president of Johns Hopkins HealthCare. "Throughout our negotiations, our mutual goal was to assure MAMSI health plan members and employer groups access to high-quality, affordable health care, and we appreciate MAMSI for its most recent efforts in bringing these contract discussions to a mutually acceptable resolution."

"Hopkins is a world-class organization and we are pleased they will continue to be part of the MAMSI network," said Thomas P. Barbera, president and CEO of MAMSI. "Importantly, for our health plan members who currently receive care from Hopkins physicians or medical centers, this agreement assures uninterrupted service."

MAMSI is one of the region's largest health service companies. Its health plans include two HMOs, MD Individual Practice Association Inc. (M.D. IPA) and Optimum Choice Inc. (OCI); a life and health insurer, MAMSI Life and Health Insurance Company (MLH); and a preferred provider organization, Alliance PPO LLC.

Approximately 5,000 MAMSI health plan members currently receive primary care from Johns Hopkins physicians. According to the Hopkins Office of Managed Care, an estimated 5 percent of patients discharged from The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in FY2001 were MAMSI enrollees.
