Activities

Activities during the year include, but are not limited to the following:

Education:

Administration, Resident, Clinical Specialists, Investigational Drug Study, Research, Central Production, Satellite Operations and Drug Information interaction will be emphasized.

Journal Club:interns_statue

Johns Hopkins Hospital is an academic medical center with a strong commitment to education.  Critical Care, Oncology and Resident Journal Clubs have been established and are available to the intern to attend.  Additionally, interns will participate in a summer Internship Journal Club attended by other interns and preceptors.  This forum will provide experience in topic discussion and medical literature critique and review.  Journal Club meets from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Thursday.

Teaching:

Various teaching opportunities exist in the internship experience. These opportunities to teach and be taught are two-fold, by way of intern presentation and preceptor education.  Interns will have the opportunity to present topics of interest for intradepartmental education or unit in-service, as agreed upon by the intern and preceptor.  Additionally, preceptors will provide a seminar discussion topic during the summer.  The topics will be contemporary with presentations by:

Pharmacotherapy Rounds:

Pharmacotherapy Rounds is a forum in which pharmacy residents in the Baltimore area gather to formally present clinically relevant topics.  Participants will learn to evaluate the scientific literature and discuss its applicability to clinical practice.  The goal of Pharmacotherapy Rounds is to enhance the participant’s knowledge regarding the use of drug therapy and to treat and prevent disease.

Pharmacotherapy Rounds are held Wednesday from Noon to 1:00 PM. The audience will consist of pharmacy residents, pharmacy practitioners, pharmacy students and invited guests.

Independent Project: intern IV

Pharmacy interns, working with a preceptor, will develop and complete independent projects during the summer experience.  The topic will be identified and agreed upon with a preceptor and results will be presented to the leadership of the Department of Pharmacy at the conclusion of the summer internship experience.

Traditionally, a 2-3 page written summary of the project is submitted upon completion. Examples of projects completed in the past include:

  • Establishment of an independent/integrated practice model for pharmacists
    • Centralized vs. Decentralized, Primary Care Clinics, PCP Concept
  • Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee/Formulary management
    • Function and Activities, Terminology, D.U.S.T., Non-formulary policy
  • Automation
    • “Robot” Cart fill, First Dose, 2-DOSE analysis
  • Scheduling and Staffing
    • Managerial skill, Staffing responsibilities, Protocol/Policy, Staff Utilization
  • Budget/Purchasing
    • Departmental Budget, Budget Requests, Stock supply
  • Pharmaceutical Care Concepts
    • Rounding, PCP, Staffing, Pharmaceutical Intervention
  • Drug Information
    • Literature Search, Documentation, Presentation of Information
  • Quality Assurance
    • USP-797, Medication Safety, JCAHO
  • Chemotherapy Safety
    • Needs for Specialized Hoods/Gowns/Gloves, PhaSeal
  • Role of PCP
    • Rounding, Individualized Patient Care
Meetings:

At the discretion of the Preceptor a number of meetings are available that can increase the understanding of Hospital and Health System practice.  A specific schedule would be developed with the preceptor by may include the following:

  • Monthly Departmental Continuing Education Programs (ACPE approved)
  • Resident Journal Club: Tuesdays, alternately 12:00-1:00 pm and 2:00-3:00 pm
  • Resident Pharmacotherapy Rounds: Wednesdays 12-1 pm
  • Point of Care Pharmacists (PCP) Group Meetings
  • Drug Use Surveillance Team (D.U.S.T.)
