Graduate Program Application

Graduate Program Application

Deadline is January 10, 2010

The Application Process

The Program

The Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences continues the tradition of graduate education established by The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine at its founding in 1893. The department offers a multidisciplinary program designed to prepare highly qualified individuals to be future leaders in academic and industrial biomedical research. The focus of this predoctoral training program is on chemical biology, the molecular interactions of living systems and the application of this knowledge to pharmacology. Within this broad scientific framework, students are encouraged to develop individually-tailored programs of study to meet their particular research interests and career objectives.

How to Apply

Applicants may apply online or submit a request to have a printed version of the application form sent to their home address.  If you wish a paper application, please make this request via e-mail to gradsoff@jhmi.edu.

If you wish to apply on line, click here:  Apply On Line

Applications to the Pharmacology Graduate Program are evaluated as soon as all materials are received.  To expedite this evaluation, if possible, we encourage all prospective students to use the online application procedure.

Qualified candidates are invited to Baltimore to meet faculty and students and to fully explore the graduate training program.  We encourage invited applicants to attend our group-interview weekend, scheduled for February 5 - 7, 2010.  Invited applicants may choose to visit and interview before or after that date if they prefer.

Transcripts, GRE Scores, and Recommendation Letters

In addition to completing the online application, all applications must include:
  • Official copies of grade transcripts (mailed in a sealed envelope directly from the institution)
  • Graduate Record Exam scores (the general test is required, the subject test is recommended, but not required.  Most commonly taken subject tests include chemistry, biology, or biochemistry)
  • At least 3 letters of recommendation (see guidelines below)

**Please note: Our ETS Institution Code for GRE/TOEFL is 5316**

These items should be sent directly to:

Office of Graduate Student Affairs
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
1830 E. Monument Street, Suite 2-107
Baltimore, MD  21287

Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation

The letters of recommendation are one of the most important factors in evaluating the candidate as a potential graduate student at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and as a future scientist.  It would be most helpful if your letter would comment specifically on factors such as the student’s motivation, maturity, intellectual curiosity, potential for research, academic performance, personality, and potential for leadership.  In addition, any strengths or weaknesses that could affect the applicant’s performance as a graduate student or scientist should be mentioned.  It will also be helpful if you would rank the applicant with respect to other students who you have known.

Special Information for International Applicants

International applicants receive the same tuition and stipends as domestic students throughout their graduate studies.  However, we encourage international applicants to seek outside fellowship support if possible. Because we often do not have the opportunity to interview international students, we require both the general and subject GRE scores to fully evaluate a candidate’s potential.  We look for applicants with an exceptionally strong academic background and a strong commitment to laboratory research.  Typically, between four and six international students are admitted into the program each year from a very competitive applicant pool.

Applicants may apply online or submit a request to have a printed version of the application form sent to their home address.  If you wish a paper application, please make this request via e-mail to gradsoff@jhmi.edu.
